Life story

Life story

Charles was born in Peckham, Surrey, the son of Henry and Susannah. He was baptised at St Giles church, Camberwell on 16th August 1846. His mother died in 1848 aged just 33. Henry married again in April 1851. He and his second wife Eliza had already had a daughter Elizabeth in 1850 before their marriage. They were listed as husband and wife at the child's baptism. Henry was employed as a coachman and Eliza worked as a laundress from their home. On 12th February 1872, Charles married Thirza Newcombe at St Anne's church, Wandsworth. Charles is described as a grocer living in Wandsworth. The couple settled in Camberwell where they had their own shop in Grove Lane. Charles and Thirza had five children, three of whom survived to adulthood. In 1886, Charles was initiated into the Freemasons Duke of Connaught Lodge in Camberwell. He retired in 1894 and the family moved to Worthing, living at "Findon House" at the north end of Downview Road. Sidney, Charles youngest son was apprenticed to a stationer and eventually opened his own business in South Street, Worthing. In 1909, Charles was elected to West Tarring Parish Council. He was already on the Board of Guardians. Thirza died in 1925 and was buried at Heene. Charles died on 26th June 1928 and was buried beside her. Probate was granted on 4th October to Robert William Charles solicitor and Thirza Elizabeth Powell (wife of Frederick William Powell). Effects £13080 8s 2d.
