Life story

Life story

Charles was born in Oakford, Devon, the son of Charles and Catherine Alice. He was baptised in Oakford on 26th November 1832 and again at the age of 11 at St Peter's church, Eaton Square, Pimlico on 6th June 1844. The family were living at 88 Ebury Street at the time and Charles Snr was described as a gentleman. In 1856, Charles joined the Royal Elthorne Light Infantry Regiment of Essex as an ensign. He was sent to South Africa and in September of that year, transferred to the Cape Mounted Riflemen. In May 1861, Charles was promoted to Lieutenant. He purchased a Captaincy in 1868. In 1872, Charles moved to India and transferred to the 17th Foot (Leicestershire Regiment). The following year he was back in South Africa and transferred to the 24th Foot (Warwickshire Regiment). In 1874, Charles retired from the army. No record of returning to England before his marriage. On 21st April 1897, Charles married Louisa Wall at St Nicholas church, Brighton. Both gave their address as Grand Parade, Eastbourne. Charles died on 2nd February 1900 at 105 Marine Parade, Worthing. No probate. Louisa moved to Sutton, Surrey to live with her brother Thomas. She died in 1936.
