Charles Bernard Greene was born on the 29th November 1862 to James and Charlotte 'Lolotte' Green (nee Moodie) in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa. His father originated from Hackney in London whereas his mother came from Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

In 1893, on the 6th December, Charles married an Edith Isabella Morton in Karkloof, Natal.
