Life story

Life story

Charles was born in Milford, Pembrokeshire, the son of John and Elizabeth. John was a master mariner and worked for Trinity House on board a lightship. Charles' brother George followed his father into Trinity House and also worked in various lighthouses all over the UK. Charles was living in South Africa by 1878 and worked as a clerk in Port Elizabeth. He joined the Freemasons in the city on August 7th 1878. Charles later moved to Durban, living at Helston House, Oxford Road. He visited England after the First World War but returned to South Africa in 1919. He is listed as a permanent resident of South Africa working as an agent. By 1928, Charles' brother George had retired to Worthing, living at 11 Heene Road. Charles died in a nursing home at 3 Bath Road, Worthing run by a Miss Howell on 12th March 1928. Probate was granted on 21st November to George Freeman, gentleman. Effects £172 2s 4d. George died in 1940 and is buried at Broadwater Cemetery.
