Life story

Charles William Emery was born Dec. quarter, 1851, Portsea Island, Hampshire. His parents were Charles Edward Emery, 26yrs, Licensed Victualler and Joiner, and Selina, 26yrs, nee Swiney. Charles had 4 siblings, Emily Ann b.1853, Mary Ann b. 1856, John b. 1859, and Selina b.1862.

Charles appears to have had a life as a seaman, the only record of his occupation was in 1877, aged 26yrs, he signed on as a crew member to the MS Greece, registered in Liverpool, and sailed to New York. His monthly salary was £4 10s.  and he was discharged in August 1879.

When Charles died on 10th July 1922, he was living at St. Stephens, Winchester Road, Worthing. Probate was granted to Charles Robert Scott, Licensed Victualler, effects £4005 1s 1d. Value 2021 - £233K.
