Story

Born in Steyning, Charles Bennett was baptised there on 17 September 1826. He was the son of George and Martha Bennett and became an agricultural labourer like his father.

He married Ann Moon (1824-1896) at Brighton in  March 1847. They lived in Broadwater Street and had their only child, Susannah.

By 1881 Charles and Ann had moved to Ashacre Lane, Salvington where he worked as a garden labourer. They had moved again by 1891, to Sheepcombe, Findon Street, Findon.

Ann died in 1896 and Charles went to live with Susannah and her husband, Henry Kent, a market gardener, at The Wallace, St Botolphs, Heene. Charles at 75 was still working and, in fact, was employed by his son-in-law. Charles died in 1905.
