Life story

Life story

Cecilia was the daughter of Hon. John Stevenson Grant and his wife Emily Frances nee Meadows. She was born in Nassau in the Bahamas, one of seven children. Her father was a merchant, churchman and a member of the Legislative Council of the Bahamas. John was born in Glasgow in 1819 and married Emily in 1845. He died in Nassau in 1871and a fulsome obituary was printed in the Hamilton Advertiser in February of that year. Emily died in 1884. Cecilia's brother Alexander was born in 1859 in Nassau and worked as a civil engineer in India. He married Georgiana Lys in 1895. When Alexander retired, the family moved to Jersey and then to Worthing. It was here that Alexander died in 1905 and was buried at Heene. Georgiana and her children lived in Longfellow Road after his death along with the two unmarried daughters of John and Emily, Cecilia and Mary Ellen. The two women seem to have spent all their lives abroad possibly in India. Cecilia died on 17th October 1917. Probate was granted on 24th November to Mary Ellen Grant spinster. Effects £881 8s 9d.
