Life story

Catherine (also spelt Katherine) was born on 30th January 1842 in Tacolneston, Norfolk, to William Corbould Warren and his Wife Anne.  William Corbould was the Reverend of the parish church of Tacolneston in Norfolk.  Catherine was one of 9 children born to William Corbould and Anne.  He died on 30th August 1858, and has a memorial plaque in  the parish Church in Tacolneston.

Catherine's Mother Anne Cubitt was the daughter of Sir William Cubitt born 1785 in Dilham, Norfolk.  He was an eminent English civil engineer and Millwright. (see separate note on sir William Cubitt)

Catherine married George Augustus Way on 3rd August 1864 at North Repps parish Church in Norfolk.

They had 9 children-

The family lived in India during 1865 to 1872 where George was serving with the 58th Bengal Native Infantry. They came back to England in 1875 where George was made a Major.  They then went back to India in 1877  returning back to England in 1881 when George was made a Lieutenant-Colonel. George returned back to India and retired in 1894.  After retirement they moved to Worthing, Sussex.

George died on 19th October 1899 in Worthing Sussex, George and Catherine were living at 1 Heene villas at the time. He left £1363 10s (£106548 in 2020) to Catherine his widow.  After her Husband's death Catherine moved to 14 Wynnstay Gardens, Kensington, London.  Catherine died in 1923 whilst living  in Cranleigh, Surrey.   She left £1100 11s 1d (approx. £45000 in 2020) with probate to Lewis Norman Way (son), and Sir Alfred Horsford Bingley and Mabel Katherine Bingley, and Dame Winifred Willcocks.

Sir William Cubitt - Grandfather of Catherine

Sir William Cubitt - Grandfather of Catherine

Sir William Cubitt was born 1785 in Dilham, Norfolk.  He was an eminent English civil engineer and Millwright. He invented a type of windmill sail and in 1812 the prison treadwheel. He moved to London in 1826, and established a consultancy being extensively employed in canal engineering, and the improvement of the River Severn was carried out by him.  He was also an expert witness at many parliamentary inquiries, including as a witness for George Stephenson on the feasibility of making a railway line across Chat Moss in Salford Manchester. In the 1830s he took over the supervision of construction of the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction canals from Thomas Telford. He was the chief engineer of Crystal Palace erected in Hyde Park and supervised its construction in 1851, after which he was knighted. He died at his residence on Clapham Common on 13th October 1861.
