Life story

Catherine Marlow Carte was born in Hull, Yorkshire, in 1831. She had 3 older sisters, Mary, 8yrs, Georgiana, 7yrs, and Sarah Louisa, 3yrs. Her father, A. Gordon Carte, worked for the military and in 1851 he was an ordnance storekeeper at the Garrison of Hull, her mother was Mary Ann Carte, nee Sherlock, b.1798.

In 1855, aged 24yrs, Catherine married Thomas Robinson Peacock, 27yrs, a Timber Merchant, in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, and they had 4 children, Georgiana K. b.1859, (died 1865), Frederick Thomas b.1861, Louisa K. b.1864, and Mary b.1866. The family had moved to Bridlington, Yorkshire, when, in 1870, aged 42yrs, Thomas died, and Catherine then supported her family running a lodging house. Both her sisters, Sarah and Mary, moved south to Folkestone and by 1901, Catherine and her 2 unmarried daughters, Louisa and Mary were in Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey.

In 1911, aged 80yrs, Catherine died on 3rd January, in Kingston, her address was 278, King's Road.
