Catherine Alice Mager was baptised on 25th July 1852 at Droxford, Hampshire. She was the eldest child of Tobias Mager, 30yrs, Draper and Grocer, and Helena, 29yrs, nee Simpson. She had 5 siblings, Frederick b.1855, Charles b.1857, Jesse b.1859, Ella b.1860, and Albert b. 1865.
In 1871, their father had changed careers and become a licensed victualler, he was landlord of The White House Inn in Droxford and after a few years, Catherine's father moved the family to Kingston-on-Thames where he became the landlord of The Barley Mow in Mill Street; he died there in January 1880 and in 1881 her mother had moved, with Catherine, Frederick and Ella, to Worthing, Sussex, where she traded as a grocer in Montague Street, assisted by Frederick.
In 1891, aged 48yrs, and unmarried, Catherine was living at 4, Victoria Terrace, (later Marine Parade) where she ran a lodging house, assisted by her sister, Ella, 40yrs, also single. They continued this business for many years, both living at the property, now known as 114, Marine Parade, until their deaths.
Catherine died, aged 76yrs, on 25th March 1929, at the Groombridge Nursing Home, Chaucer Road. Probate was granted to Albert Edgar Mager, commercial traveller, and Henry Hewitt Lambert, solicitor, effects £1734 5s 0d. Value 2022 - £117K.
