Caroline Elizabeth Nichols was born in 1821, she was baptised on 22nd November 1822 at All Saints, Edmonton, Enfield, together with her brother, John Dorsett. She was the daughter of William Nichols, a coal merchant, and Mary Nichols. Caroline had 3 other siblings, George b.1818, Amelia b.1826, and Henry Zachery b.1829.
By 1851 Caroline and Amelia were both working as governesses, George was running the coal business and Henry was a mariner; they lived together at 7, St. Michael's Terrace, Hanover Square.
Caroline doesn't appear on another census until 1881, when she has retired as a governess and is living in Clewer, near Windsor, Berkshire, at St. Andrew's Cottages; these properties were alms-houses for elderly ladies, run by an Anglican religious community for women.
Caroline died on 1st July 1883, aged 62yrs, at an unknown address in Heene, Worthing, she was buried at Heene cemetery on 4th July 1883. Probate was granted to Francis Mount Durnford, solicitor, acting for her brother, Henry Zachery Nichols, now residing in New Zealand.
