Life story

Life story

Caroline was born in Downham Market, Norfolk, the daughter of James and Mary. Her father was a surgeon. She was baptised at Downham on 30th October 1843. The family emigrated to Australia c1854 but Caroline stayed to complete her education. She followed her parents after 1861. The Patterson family settled in Robe Street, St Kilda, Melbourne. Caroline married Dr James Patrick Murray in St Kilda on 8th September 1866. He was originally from Ireland. Their son George was born in 1868, followed by Mary Eleanor Caroline in 1870 and Leslie in 1872. Caroline's husband James sold his practice in 1871 and bought a brig "Carl" ostensibly to trade amongst the South Sea Islands and to set up a plantation on one of the islands. He was involved in kidnapping and murdering many of the islanders. The story of the "Carl" can be found in many newspapers of the time. Dr Murray was described as "charming, devious, a monster and murderer" by the Australian press. He turned Queen's Evidence to escape punishment. The doctor deserted his family and returned to England in 1873. He lived in Warwickshire for a while and then disappeared. Caroline returned later and settled in London with the children. By 1891, she described herself as a widow. By 1903, Caroline and her daughter Mary were in India where Mary married Henry Nelson. The couple returned to England in 1907 and settled in Worthing. Caroline lived with them. She died in High Salvington on 26th June 1926. No Probate.
