Life story

Caroline Amelia Powell was born on 4th June 1836 in Newington, London, she was the youngest of 5 siblings, her father was John Powell, 40yrs, Clerk at Law, mother, Sarah Powell, 35yrs, nee Boggis, In 1841, the family lived at 13, South Place, Newington, Caroline was 5, her brother, John, 13, sisters, Ellen, 11, Emily, 8, and Julia, 7. In 1851 when Caroline was 14yrs old, 2 visitors were with the family, brothers, John Gibbs 19, and Henry Gibbs, 15, she was to marry Henry 41 years later. Caroline continued to live with her parents, her mother died in 1861, she then moved to 2, Grove Villas, Lambeth, with her father, now a widower. In 1892, on 21st July, Caroline, 55yrs, married Henry Charles Beaumont Gibbs, at St. Saviour's, Brixton Hill, he was Proctor at St. Bartholomew's Hospital. They lived at Henry's home, 19, Maze Hill, Greenwich, until he retired in 1901, and they then moved to Worthing, where they lived at Gethylis, Winchester Road, with Henry's unmarried sisters, Emily Frances and Elizabeth Mary Gibbs. Caroline Amelia Gibbs died in Worthing, on 12th February 1908, aged 71yrs. Probate was granted to her husband, Henry. Effects - £1079 12s 7d. Value 2020 - £130K.
