Life story

Life story

Caroline Burton was born on 2nd February 1844, she was baptised at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden, on 10th March 1844. Her parents were Isaac Burton, 34yrs, wine cooper*, and Mary Anne, 30yrs, nee Payne; she had 3 older siblings, William b.1834, Maria b.1840, Isaac b.1842, and 2 younger sisters, Martha b.1846, and Charlotte b. 1848.

Caroline lived with her family and then with her brother, William, all her life, she did not appear to have had an occupation, and she never married. In 1877 her widowed father died, and 2 years later her brother, Isaac, also a wine cooper, died; Caroline was staying with his widow and young children in 1881.

Caroline then lived with her brother, William, a draper's assistant, in Islington, and after his retirement they moved to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at Addison House, Rowlands Road.

Caroline's brother, William, died, aged 81yrs, in January 1915, and less than six months later, Caroline died, on 10th June, aged 71yrs. Probate was granted to a niece, Faith Huneberg, spinster, effects, £1447 12s 6d. value 2022 - £165,000.

*A Wine Cooper was a person who sampled, bottled and sold wine.
