Story

Caroline was born in Heene, the daughter of George and Mary Bushby. She was baptised at West Tarring Church on 8th November 1811. Her father died before 1841. On 13th June 1834, Caroline married William Belton a fisherman, at West Tarring church. The couple lived in Heene Lane (Road) and had four children, Ellen, Frederick, George and John. The two younger boys died in 1851. Caroline’s mother Mary lived with the family until her death in 1876. On 7th November 1855 William drowned in an accident off Ramsgate along with five other fishermen. Caroline as a widow took in washing and worked as a charwoman. Her son Frederick was a sailor. By 1871, Caroline and her mother shared a house with the Guile family in Heene Lane. Life became much harder for Caroline after her mother died and she had to apply for Parish relief. She died in December 1891 and was buried at Heene on 17th December. No probate.
