Life story

Bertha Parnell was born in 1886 in Oundle, Northhamptonshire, to Robert Parnell and Isabella Urpeth Parnell, nee Nisbet, who were married in Bromley, Kent in 1881. Bertha had an older brother, Ralph, 3yrs. Her father was an Auctioneer and the family lived at 4, Grosvenor Villas, Peterborough. He died, in 1889 aged 36yrs, when Bertha was 3yrs. old. In the census of 1891 Bertha 4yrs, and Ralph 7yrs, were living in Bromley with their grandparents, John Nisbet, 64yrs, a Commercial Factor Agent and Lucy Sarah Nisbet, 62yrs. Two aunties lived with the family, Margaret Nisbet, 39yrs, and Lucy Calcott, 36yrs, and they employed 3 domestic servants. Their mother did not appear on the census. In 1893, aged 7yrs, Bertha Parnell died in Portsmouth.
