Life story

Bertha Ind Hutt was born in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa, on 25th December 1864; she was the daughter of Richard Goode Hutt, 33yrs, a missionary clergyman, and Emily, 29yrs, nee Brooker. Bertha was 1 of 14 children, 5 born in S. Africa, 9 in England.

In 1888, Bertha married John William Hopper, 24yrs, at Houghton-le-Spring, Co. Durham, he was a shipowner's clerk, the couple lived in Sunderland, Durham, and had 3 children, Bernard b.1888, John b.1891, and Doris b.1893.

Bertha and her family remained in Sunderland for over twenty years, her husband becoming a shipbroker, and finally a shipowner, retiring in his early 50s, and in 1921 they lived in Hertfordshire.

Bertha was widowed in 1929 when John died, aged 65yrs, leaving his family £682,000. (2023 value).

At the outbreak of war in 1939, Bertha and her daughter, Doris, were living in Axminster, Devon, both on private means, and at some point, they moved to Worthing, Sussex, living at 11/12, Marine Parade.

Bertha died in the summer of 1961, aged 96yrs.
