Story
Benjamin was born in Bermondsey, the son of John and Ann. He was baptised at St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey on 25 Mar 1843. John was a tanner and Benjamin followed his father into the business. Benjamin started work as a leather dresser and worked his way up to factory manager by 1881. In 1867, he married Emily Hinton at St Mary Magdalene, Southwark on 18 Feb. At the time he was living in East Street, Bermondsey and employed as a leather dresser. In 1869, the couple lived at 77 Bermondsey New Road. As the family grew, they moved out to Camberwell. By 1900 Benjamin was the owner of a tanning factory in Upper Russell Street in Bermondsey. Two of his sons followed him into the business. Although in 1911 the family were still in Surrey, two of Benjamin’s daughters were visiting Worthing possibly looking for a family home. In 1914 the family were living at 32 Thorn Road which they ran as a lodging house. Benjamin died c30 Sep 1915 and was buried at Heene on 2 Oct. No Probate.
