Story

Beatrice Mary Blanche Tregaskis was born in St. Issey, Cornwall, in 1865; she was the daughter of Samuel Thomas Tregaskis, 34yrs, a merchant and farmer, and Charlotte, 37yrs, nee Robbins. She was 1 of 6 children, she attended a boarding school in Plymouth as a teenager.

Beatrice remained living with her family until 16th April 1900 when, aged 34yrs, she married, Sidney Lynch, 37yrs, who had been born in Assam, India, and worked there as a civil engineer. They moved to Lancashire where Sidney was employed as a mechanical engineer, and in 1901, their daughter, Nina Beatrice, known as Nissa, was born in Chester, Manchester, she was their only child. In 1911 the family were living in Lewisham, London.

At some point, after 1911, Sidney went back to India, he returned in February 1916, stating his last country of residence as Afghanistan. A few weeks later, on 31st May, Sidney set sail from Liverpool for New York, his intended place of residence. Beatrice did not accompany her husband on any of these voyages.

On the census of 1921, Beatrice was working in London, as a domestic employee, at 30-31-32, Upper Bedford Place, probably a hotel or institution, she was still married. In 1923 she was living in Worthing, Sussex, where she had rented a large furnished property called Melrose, in Manor Road, and she appeared to be taking lodgers and paying guests for the sum of 6 guineas per week.

In January 1924, the Worthing Gazette printed an account of a court case, where the prisoner, Winifred Page aka Maxwell Heron, was charged with larceny in a dwelling house; she was apparently a guest of Beatrice at Melrose, Manor Road, and had stolen several items of jewellery from her. Other charges were also brought, and the prisoner was committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions in Chichester. Beatrice recovered her stolen goods. In 1925 she appeared to have moved to Sea Bank, Manor Road.

Beatrice died in Worthing on 21st March 1938, aged 71yrs. No probate.
