Life story

Life story

Barbara Hofland Charlotte Dixon was born on the 30th November 1838 in Hammersmith London to Henry James and Jane Dixon, she was one of 9 children. Henry James was a landed Proprietor, which meant that he owned property that generated income without the owner having to do work for the estate. They lived at Andover House, Fulham, Middlesex in 1851.  By 1861 the family had moved to Hove in Sussex and lived in Aston Lodge, Hove.

Barbara didn't marry and lived at home until her parent's death. Barbara's Father died in 1876 and her Mother died in 1878. After this she stayed with her Sister Jane who lived at Coopers Hill, Bracknell, Berkshire.  Then by 1891 she was living with her Brother Harvey at Villetta, Warblington, Hampshire. Harvey was a retired General Practioner.

By 1901 Barbara moved to Worthing and lived at Westwell Downview Road, Worthing. She was living on her own means and had 1 servant. She is still living there in 1911 but now has 2 servants.

Barbara was living at Westwell Downview Road when she died on 17th April 1923. She left an estate of £35623 12s 6d (£1,462,640 in 2020) with probate to Albert Henry Dixon and Bertram Harold Dixon (Nephews)
