Life story

Life story

Avis was born in Dum Dum, Bengal, India the daughter of James Anthony Barnard and his wife Bridget. She was baptised in Dum Dum on 30th August 1839. On 7th September 1864, Avis married Edward Stanley, a veterinary surgeon in Lucknow, Bengal. Their son Edward was born in 1865 and a daughter Clara was born in 1868. Sadly she died the following year in Benares. In 1870, the family moved to England, living in Warwick. Bernard was born there in 1871 followed by Edith Mary in 1873 and Howard in 1879. In 1884, the family were in Australia as Edward had been promoted to Chief Veterinary Inspector at the Board of Health. Edward stayed in Australia but by 1900, Avis was back in England with her daughter Edith and three grandchildren. They lived in Chesswood Road, Worthing until 1906, then moving to "Newstead" in Heene Road. (This was on the west side, just north of the Mill Road crossroads). Avis died here on 29th January 1906. Probate was granted on 15th September to Edith Mary Stanley spinster. Effects £95

Edward married again in Australia in 1908 and died there in 1924.
