Story
Avis Lidbetter was baptised at Durrington Parish Church on 5th April 1857; she was the daughter of George Lidbetter, 43yrs, Carter, and Mary, 40yrs, nee Peacock, 1 of 7 children.
Avis went into domestic service until she was 20yrs of age when she married Frederick Long, a gardener, at Findon Parish Church, on 25th December 1877.
Frederick then followed his father’s trade and became a market gardener, he worked locally all his life, from Durrington to Goring and then lastly at Heene. They had 10 children over the next 20 years, 9 survived, 5 boys and 4 girls. By 1901 the family had moved to Heene, living in Rugby Road, and 4 of their sons worked as market gardeners. Avis was widowed when Frederick died in April 1931, aged 79yrs, and 8 years later, Avis died, aged 82yrs, on 27th March 1939.
