Story

The first burial recorded by The Rev Henry Beckles, Rector of Heene, in the new Graveyard in Manor Road, was that of 11 year-old Arthur William Harding, on October 15th 1873. Unfortunately, there is no memorial for him and no record of where he was actually buried has been found so far.

Arthur was born in October 1862 at 53 High Street, Worthing to William and Elizabeth Harding, the second of five children. In 1861 William and Elizabeth were Lodgers in the White Hart Inn in Crawley, and William was a Labourer. Their first child, Elizabeth, born in 1861, was baptised in 1861 in Horley. The younger children were all baptised at West Tarring. Charlotte Alice in 1864, Richard Henry in 1868, Eliza Kate in 1870 and James in 1872.

In the 1871 census he was recorded living in Church Street, West Tarring, with his parents, William an Agricultural Labourer born in Guildford, and Elizabeth, born in Ripley, Surrey.

The family lived at 14 Church Street West Tarring when Arthur died on 10th October 1873 of Tubercular Meningitis. His Father William was present at the death.
