Life story

Life story

Arthur was born in Pembroke Dock, the son of Samuel and Frances Emma. He was baptised at Pembroke Dock Garrison on 30th November 1882. Arthur's father was a sergeant in the 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. In 1891, the regiment was in Hazara, Afghanistan. In 1896, Arthur was a student at Grove Park Grammar School in Wrexham. He joined the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1898 and was stationed in Devon in 1901. On 3rd September 1913, Arthur married Nesta Beatrice Rees in Conwy. His daughter Nesta Maisie Dark had been born in Bedwelty the year before. A second daughter Marian was born in Bedwelty in 1914. The same year, Arthur was attached to 6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers and sent to Egypt. In 1915, he was back with the 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers serving in France from 1st June. He was also promoted to Captain. During the war, his records show two addresses: Somerset House, Leamington Spa and 336 Belgrade Road, Birmingham. At the end of the war, Arthur retired from the Army and joined the RAF as a Captain. He served until 1920. His wife Nesta served in the WRAF from 1918. In 1922, the family were living at 722 Coventry Road, Small Heath, Birmingham. They were staying at 119A Rowlands Road, Worthing when Arthur died on 26th May 1926. Probate was granted on 21st June to Nesta Beatrice Dark widow. Effects £107 11s 5d.
