Life story

Life story

Arthur William was the son of William Barnes, a civil servant from Leicestershire, and his wife, Sarah Emma Mitchell, born in Brighton, daughter of a cooper. In 1881 the family were living at 64, Fullerton Road, Wandsworth and William was an usher in the High Court of Justice. Arthur William at this time was the youngest of five children. He could not be found in 1891 but was still living at 64, Fullerton Road in 1901 with his father, now a widower, and a housekeeper. Arthur's occupation was commercial traveller. On 9 April 1905 he married Ellen Philmore, the daughter of a labourer, at St.Andrew's Parish Church, Stockwell, London.

By 1911 they were living at 4, Thorn Road, Worthing, and had 2 children, Gwendoline Alice Mary Philmore Barnes, born in May 1906, and Donald Philmore Barnes, born in June 1908. Gwendoline was adventurous and spent some years in New South Wales. In the UK she was described in 1939 as unmarried and a Local Authority cemetery clerk. Donald also had not married by 1939 and was a builder's merchant's shop assistant.

Arthur died on 9 October 1932 in a Hospice leaving £681 1s 5d to Ellen.
