Story

Arthur is not buried at Heene but remembered on his father’s gravestone. He was born in Tottenham, the son of Edwin and Amelia. Arthur was baptised at All Hallows Church, Tottenham on 9th September 1885. By 1888, the family had moved to Hereford where his father opened a boarding school for boys. Amelia died the following year. Arthur worked as a bank clerk for the National Provincial Bank. By 1911, the family were living in Winchmore Hill near Ealing and Arthur worked in the city. In 1912, he was called as a witness in a fraud case at the Old Bailey (see Old Bailey on-line for details). At the start of the First World War, Arthur joined the Honourable Artillery Co. and served in France with the British Expeditionary Force. By the end of the war, he was a captain and awarded an OBE for service in France. For a while, Arthur lived with his family after they moved to “Westbury” in Grand Avenue, Worthing. In 1925, Arthur married Gladys Mary Slater at Holy Trinity Church, Winchmore Hill. The couple settled in Hove. In 1939, Arthur was listed as a patient at St Elizabeth Nursing Home in Brighton. His occupation was given as a Captain in TA Reserves. By 1950 he was living at 6 Saxon Road, Hove. He died here on 14th February 1950. Probate was granted on 5th April to Gladys Mary Baker widow. Effects £1934 11s 9d.
