Story
Arthur Ashling was born in Thorney, near Peterborough about 1859, son of John Thomas and Betsy Ashling. John (baptised in Thorney in 1833) and Betsy (who was born in Bedfordshire) were married in Thorney in 1855 and went on to have seven children.
In 1891 Arthur, now married to Emily Harriet, who was from Chelsea, was living at 14 Milton Street, a Builder and Contractor, with 3 daughters, all Worthing born.
(Brother Henry was also a Builder – in Cobden Road in 1889.)
In 1901 Betsy, ‘Widow of a Builder’, was living, with daughter Ethel, at Kingsdale in Tarring Road. Ethel was a Teacher of Music, then 22. She married in 1903.
Arthur and Emily lived at Karos in Rowlands Road by 1901. He was a Builder/Employer and they had three daughters and a son. Elsie Clara and Mabel Violet were both listed as Domestic Helps in 1911, and they had been joined by Emily’s 78 year-old widowed mother, Sarah Honess, from Dorset.
They had 5 children, 4 living by 1911, and there is also a Cyril Victor Ashling, in the Cemetery, buried in 1900, aged 5 months. He may be the lost child.
Sadly, Arthur filed for bankruptcy in October 1911 – maybe the building bubble had burst!
John Thomas died in 1898, Betsy in 1911. Arthur died in 1914, daughter Elsie Clara in 1918, aged only 32, and Emily in 1934 – then living in Thorn Road. They are all in the Cemetery.
Sarah Honess was buried in the Cemetery in 1922.
