Life story

Life story

Annie was born in Aberystwyth, the daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth. She was baptised at St Michael's church, Aberystwyth on 1st January 1841. Her father worked for a local solicitor as a writing clerk. By 1861, Annie was in London working as a house servant and cook. A few years later, she was working for Colonel Henry Clinton in the village of Barkway in Hertfordshire. She may have met her future husband Edouard Singre here as he was working for the Earl of Selkirk who had connections with Lord Strathnairn whose estate was in Barkway. Annie married Edouard in London in 1880. He had been born in Versailles, France in 1838 and was a widower. Edouard had a son Charles Edward by his wife Margueritte in 1865. After she died, Edouard brought his son to England. At the time of his marriage, Edouard was working for the Earl of Selkirk in Berkeley Square, London. By 1882, Edouard and Annie were working for Lord Strathnairn in Barkway, near Royston. The couple had to appear in court in 1882, when a neighbour threw a stone though the window of their cottage on the estate and broke a mirror. Edouard and Annie moved to Ireland running several restaurants near Belfast including The Burn at Crawfordsburn. Many advertisements for their services appeared regularly in the Belfast Newsletter up to the turn of the century. In 1901, they were living in Windsor, Belfast and advertising for a situation managing a small hotel or club. By 1906, the couple were in Worthing, running a boarding house in Thorn Road. Annie's sister Jane Pugh died here in 1906 and is buried at Heene. Annie died c7th February 1912 and was buried at Heene on 9th February. No probate.

Edouard died in 1913. He is not buried at Heene as he was a Roman Catholic. His death was registered in the Steyning district of Sussex. No probate.
