Life story

Life story

Annie was born in Coal Island, Waterford, Ireland on 22 June 1889. Her parents were Samuel James and Annie Marsh and in 1901 they were living in Roughan, Tullyniskane, County Tyrone, Ireland. Young Annie, aged 18, emigrated to Canada on the "Ionian" and arrived in Montreal on 29 May 1907 to live with her brother, Samuel James Marsh, junior, his Irish wife, their 2 children and his Irish mother-in-law. Annie worked as an operator in a factory. Their address was 111, Maple Avenue, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario. On the 9 May 1912 Annie married Oliver Stanley Finch at the Anglican Church of St Peter in Hamilton. Annie's religion was Church of Ireland which meant she was Anglican. Oliver had been born in Leatherhead, Surrey, and, like Annie, had emigrated to Hamilton in 1907. By 1915 they had returned to England and were living at "Kings Wood", St Anselm's Road, Worthing. Oliver enlisted in the Royal Sussex Regiment reg. no 4556, at Horsham on 10 April 1915 but his medical records the following year make it hard to believe that he was accepted into the Forces at all. On 10 August 1916 he was described by his own assertions to have been "ailing all his life" and been in Brompton Hospital with chest problems at the age of 7. He had been discharged from the Canadian Highlanders in 1914 on account of defective "teeth and eyes". The medical officer who examined him in 1916 wrote that he became "short of breath on exertion", and had "not done full Duty for some time". In addition, his physique was "poor" and "he looks ill". He was discharged as "permanently unfit" on 22 August 1916. When Annie died of acute miliary tuberculosis on 7 October 1918 they were living at "Sunnydene", Harrow Road, Worthing and Oliver was at her bedside. Annie was buried at Heene on 10 October 1918
