Life story

Anne Eliza Beaumont was born on 24th October 1861, she was baptised on 22nd December that year in Croydon, Surrey. Her father was William Beaumont, 43yrs, Post Office Messenger, and her mother, Maria, 43yrs. She had 2 brothers, William, born 1857(died 1865), Robert Henry born 1860.

Anne Eliza Beaumont married her first cousin, Charles Beaumont in Croydon in 1885 and they had 4 children, Charles, 1885, Ethel, 1886, Edith, 1888, (died young) and Leonard, 1889. Charles owned a Coal Merchant's business in Worthing High Street, when he retired at the age of 56 yrs. their two sons, Charles and Leonard took over the business and ran it as a partnership until Leonard went abroad.

Ann was widowed in 1924, she lived in the family home with her unmarried children, but her son Leonard died from cancer, aged 35yrs, just two years after his father. In 1939, Ann was an invalid and being cared for by her daughter, Ethel, at 26, Christchurch Road, Worthing.

On 11th October 1950, Ann suffered a fall at home and after several weeks in Southlands Hospital she died on 20th November. She was 89yrs old.

Obituary

1950 – Worthing Gazette – 22nd November. The death occurred on Monday of Mrs. A Beaumont of 26, Christchurch Road who had been a Worthing resident for 64 years. Mrs. Beaumont died as a result of a fall in her home. She was the wife of the late Mr. Charles Beaumont, a retired coal merchant. They had three children, two of whom are still alive. One of those is Mr. Charles Beaumont who still carries on a coal merchant’s business.

Miscellaneous information

1950 – Worthing Herald – 24th November

A verdict of accidental death was recorded by the Coroner, Mr. Francis F. Haddock, at an inquest on Wednesday on Mrs. A. E. Beaumont, of Christchurch Road, Worthing, who fell in her home on October 11th. Mrs. Beaumont died in Southlands Hospital, Shoreham, on November 20th. She was 86 years and the widow of Mr. Charles Beaumont, a retired Coal merchant. Miss Ethel Beaumont told the coroner that she had heard a bump in the hall on the morning of October 11th and found her mother lying stretched out but fully conscious. Mrs Beaumont was later removed to Southlands Hospital. Dr. D.O. Williams said that the right femur was fractured in the fall. The cause of death he gave as myocardial degeneration and hypostatic pneumonia, accelerated by a fractured femur.
