Life story

Life story

Anna Hancock nee Rogers (1863 - 1956) Anna Rogers was born on24th February 1863, in New York, U.S.A. to Michael Warner Rogers, one of the founding members of the New York Stock Exchange, and Anna Amelia Brown. She had 2 brothers and one sister: John Brown Rogers 1843, Richard W B Rogers 1849 and Grace Rogers 1856.

Anna travelled to England after her sister, Grace, was widowed.  Grace married Walter Hancock, a Clerk in Holy Orders, in London in 1897 and Anna was her witness. 3 years later Anna married Walter Hancock's brother, Herbert, also a Clerk in Holy Orders. They married in Charlton Kings, a suburb of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire on 19th September 1900 and Walter Hancock was a witness. In 1900, Anna gave her address as: New Court, Charlton Kings.

Anna lived with Herbert in St. Albans until 1905 where Herbert was the rector of St. Michael's. On the 26th September 1905, the couple baptised their son, Michael Herbert Swinburne Hancock, at St. James' Church, Brighton.

In 1910, Anna and Michael moved with Herbert to the Parish of Stokesby with Herringby, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Herbert, remained the vicar at Stokesby until his retirement in 1936. Herbert was succeeded by their son, Michael, to the living which was in Anna's gift. Herbert then took up the retirement post of Chaplain to Ex Servicemen in Worthing and in 1939, Anna and Herbert are registered as residing in 88 Heene Road, Worthing.

Anna died in 1956, three years after the death of Herbert. They are both buried in Heene Cemetery.
