Life story

Life story

Ann's name at birth was registered as Elizabeth Ann but she was usually known as Ann. She was born in Kingsclere, Hampshire, the daughter of Charles and Eliza. Her father was a sawyer. Ann left the village as a young girl and worked as a servant at an inn in Sedgeley, Staffordshire before moving to London. On 16th December 1866, she married James Sainsbury, a grocer, at St Mary's church, Islington. Their first child Elizabeth was born in 1868 followed by Arthur James in 1870, Alice in 1872, James in 1873 and Rose in 1877. Sadly both sons died when babies. The family lived in Lambeth for many years before moving to Worthing. James set up a provisions business in Thorn Road. Both James and Ann were non-conformists and attended West Worthing Tabernacle in Ripley Road. They helped to raise funds for the building of the church. Their daughter Elizabeth died in 1909 and was buried in the churchyard at Goring. By 1911, James's business had failed although the family still lived above the shop. Ann died on 9th May 1918. She was buried according to the Burial Law Amendment Act of 1880 which meant no bell was tolled and there was no religious service. The burial was certified by Pastor John Onions of West Worthing Tabernacle. No probate.
