Life story

Life story

Ann was born in Worthing, daughter of John and Frances. She was baptised at Broadwater church on 15th April 1827. Her father was a basket maker. As a young woman, Ann worked as a servant to Thomas Shotter, a saddler who had premises next to the Nelson Hotel in South Street, Worthing. On 23rd January 1848, Ann married William Cooper at Broadwater church. The couple moved to High Street in Tarring where William worked as a labourer and Ann as a charwoman. They had four children, William, Frederick, Philip and Alfred. By 1861, the family were living in Church Street, Tarring and William was working as a cowman. Ann later found a job as a domestic cook at East Mansion in Wordsworth Road. Anne died at the beginning of March 1881 and was buried at Heene on 3rd March. No probate.

William was listed at East Mansion in 1881 census but no longer there by next census.
