Life story

Amy Caroline Cates was born in Teignmouth, Devon in 1878 to George Frederick Cates, R.N. and Mary Caroline nee Paine. When she was 2yrs. old she was living with her mother, Mary, 30yrs, and younger brother, Hugh, 4 months, at Brookvale Cottage, Newton Abbot, Devon. By 1891 when Amy was 12yrs old she had 4 siblings, Hugh 10, Arthur 7, Maria 6 and Evelyn 2; her father died in 1891. Amy, aged 29yrs. married John Stanley Rowe on 12th November 1908 at Christ Church, Turnham Green, Middlesex; he was an Underwriters Deputy at Lloyds. In 1911 they had a 1yr old daughter, Amy Barbara Rowe and were living at Crediton, Eagle Road, Wembley, Middlesex, they employed 2 domestic servants. Their son, John Hugh Rowe was born in 1912 and was baptised on 28th July at East Sheen. Amy Caroline Rowe died aged 23yrs, on 23rd July 1921 at Caer Gwent Nursing Home, Wykeham Road, Worthing. Her address was Stoke House, Penn Road, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. Probate was granted to her husband; she left estate of £991 10s 1d. Value 2020 - £48K. Her death certificate gave the cause of death as "(1) Uterine fibroids (operation) (2) Paralysis of intestines."
