Life story

Life story

Alice's father could not be traced neither could her birth certificate. When she married Arthur Acheson McAnally, her father's name and occupation were missed from the marriage register and certificate. From about the age of 8, Alice was sent to boarding schools. On the 1851 census, she was at 4 Grove Place, Kensington and in 1861, she was boarding at Oaklands House School, Woolavington, Sussex where Matilda Mellersh was the head teacher. When Alice married Arthur at St Andrew's church, Hove, Sussex on 7th May 1867, Matilda signed the marriage certificate as one of the witnesses. Alice and Arthur had eight children, two of whom had died before 1911. They moved to Worthing in about 1902 to a house named "Barkwith" in Tennyson Road. Alice was widowed in 1914 and at the time of her death in 1927, had moved back to 34 Pembroke Road, Kensington, London. She died on 4th November 1927. Probate was granted on 17th January 1928 to John Asheson McAnally and Henry William Watson McAnally esquires. Effects £343 12s 4d.
