Life story

Alice Emma Hastings was born in 1864 in Hackney, London. She was the daughter of Daniel and Emma Hastings, she had an older sister, Ellen 2yrs.

In 1881 Alice was a 17yr old Dressmaker, her sister Ellen, 19yrs., was a Pupil Teacher, and a 21yr. old cousin, Edward McCarthy, Teacher, was with the family. Her father, Daniel, 42yrs, was an unemployed Porter, her mother Emma, 42yrs. and they lived at 80 Gloucester Rd., St. Pancras, Middlesex.

In 1888, on 1st September, Alice Emma married John Henry Langley at St. John Evangelist, Upper Norwood, they were both 23yrs of age.

In 1891 they lived at 75, Henslowe Road, Camberwell, John Henry, Commercial Clerk, and Alice Emma now had a son, Percy Henry, 1yr.

By 1901 they had moved to 118, Upland Road, Camberwell, and had a second son, Hubert, 7yrs, John Henry was now an Accountant's Clerk.

Alice Emma Langley died on 6th September 1901 at 22, Thorn Road, Worthing, aged 37yrs. Her death certificate gave the cause of death as "Malignant Endocarditis, Asthenia."
