Life story

Alice was born in Marylebone, the daughter of Thomas and Harriet. She was baptised at St Mary's church, Marylebone on 6th March 1849. Her father was a wealthy builder who ran the family firm which later included his sons Thomas and Edward. Thomas Snr died on 1st March 1862 and was buried at Kensal Green. His widow moved the family to Croydon where she died on 9th March 1885. Three of the sisters, Elizabeth, Alice and Ann lived together and by 1901 they moved to Worthing, living at 40 Grafton Road. Elizabeth was about ten years older than her sisters. By 1914, the three women were living at "Jesmondene" 22 Christchurch Road, Worthing. Elizabeth died on 27th April 1923. She was not buried at Heene. In January 1928, Alice was carrying parcels to a friend when she slipped outside the house and broke her thigh. She was sent to Groombridge Nursing Home in Chaucer Road to recover. Unfortunately, she became ill with pleurisy and died on 20th January. Probate was granted on 13th March 1928 to Alfred Howard warehouseman and Howard Challoner Cutler retired lieutenant colonel HM Army. Effects £1387 11s. Worthing Gazette January 23rd 1928

Slipped on Pavement - Old Lady's Accidental Death How a Christ Church Road resident of 78 , slipped on the pavement while carrying goods to an old servant and sustained injuries which resulted in her death on Friday was told to the Coroner for West Sussex (Mr. F.W. Butler) at an inquest at the Fire Station on Saturday. Deceased was Miss Alice Sophia Howard, Jesmondine, Christ Church Road. It was stated that it had not been possible to trace persons who actually saw the accident. Evidence of identification was given by deceased’s brother, a retired West Australian merchant living at Wisborough Green, who said that when he saw his sister at Worthing nursing home after her accident she said that she had her hands full with some things which she was taking to an old servant when she slipped and fell. For her age she was very energetic. Broken Thigh – Dr. Alec Densham said he saw Miss Howard after the accident on January 5th and, finding that she had a fractured femur, arranged for her removal to the nursing home. Later she showed signs of pleurisy, and she died of pleuro-pneumonia. She told him that she was carrying some parcels and slipped on the pavement outside her house. The Coroner recorded a verdict of Accidental Death.
