Life story

Life story

Alice was one of the many children of Edward Rhodes Harrison and his wife Juliet, nee Morgan. Alice was baptised at Goffs Oak, Hertfordshire on 8 July 1879 but by 1881 the family was living at Manor Villas, Heene. Her father died in 1886 and the family at some point moved to West End Villas, Worthing. Alice died at the age of 10. Her death certificate states that she fell off a tricycle on 17 August and died of her injuries the following day. An inquest was held and the details of the child's injuries are shocking. The tricycle was a heavy one and too large for a child and she could only just reach the pedals. There were no witnesses to what happened but she was found beneath the tricycle with the handle bar penetrating her left eye and brain. She was unconscious and died without regaining consciousness. The inquest, held at the Burlington Hotel, was conducted by the deputy coroner for West Sussex, F W Butler, who recorded a verdict of accidental death.
