Life story

Life story

Alice was born in Brighton, the daughter of John and Mary Ann. Her father was a plumber who died when she was 10. She was baptised at St Paul's church, Brighton on 25th February 1863. At the time, the family lived at 13 Duke Street. By the 1871 Census, they had moved to Church Street, Brighton. On 29th December 1879, Alice married Walter Burnand at St Nicholas church, Brighton. For a while the couple lived in Chichester before moving north to Rugby and then to Leamington Spa. They had seven children but sadly three died young. Lily May died in 1892 aged 4, Albert Edmund died in 1894 aged 2 and Emily died in 1897 before her first birthday. By 1901, the family had moved back south, living in Southwick where Walter had his own business as a gent's outfitter. In 1910, the family moved to Worthing, living at "Moorlands" in Belsize Road. Walter died suddenly on 5th October 1925. Alice continued to live at "Moorlands" now 19 Belsize Road until her death on 3rd July 1938. Probate was granted on 1st December 1938 to Cyril Lawrence Burnand, draper. Effects £197 18s 6d.
