Alfred was born in 1843 in Walton on Thames, Surrey to Henry and Elizabeth Tilley. Henry was working as a Baker employing 2 men. In 1851 Alfred was living with his parents at Pound Street, Walton on Thames, Surrey. In 1861 the family are living in Common Side, Walton on Thames and Henry is still working as a Baker. By 1871 Alfred has left home and is living in the High Street, Penge, Lewisham along with his Brother Henry and his cousin Maria Sarah, who he went on to marry in 1871 in Kingston Surrey. Alfred is a Grocer/Tea dealer. By 1901 Alfred has retired to Brighton, and is living at 53 Springfield Road, Brighton. By 1911 Alfred has moved back to Surrey and is living at Woodcote Road, Wallington, Surrey, However, by 1921 Alfred, Maria, and 3 of his Daughters have moved back to the south coast and are living in Beechwood 25 Belsize Road, Worthing, Sussex.

Alfred died on the 27th October 1924 in Worthing, Sussex, whilst living at Beechwood 25 Belsize Road, Worthing. He left £2747 13s 7d (approx. £112,800 in 2020) to Maria Sarah Tilley his Wife.
Maria continued to live in Belsize Road in Worthing until approx. 1936, but then moved back to Surrey and lived at 1 Harold Road, Upper Norwood Surrey. She died there on 8th August 1939.
