Life story

Alfred Lawrence was born in Wells, Somerset, he was baptised on 21st December 1842 at St. Cuthbert, Wells. His father was George Lawrence, a Saddler, (later Postmaster), and his mother was Sophia, nee Misselbrook. He had 3 siblings, Edward b.1835, Sidney b.1839, and Catherine b.1845. On 19th January 1879 Alfred, 36yrs, married Augusta Sophia Parker, 19yrs, at Minehead, Somerset.Alfred was a bank manager at Bruton, Somerset, a position he remained in until his retirement. He and Augusta had one son, William Northcote, in 1880. Their marriage appears to have failed sometime after 1891; they were living apart in 1901, Alfred in Bruton, and Augusta was lodging in Bristol, living on her own means. In 1911, she was registered as a housekeeper in Westminster. In 1911, Alfred, 68yrs, had retired and moved to Hastings where he was living with Annie Jane Lawrence, 52yrs*, stating they had been married for 2 yrs. (No record). In 1912 Alfred Lawrence, 69yrs, married Annie Jane Wood, 33yrs*, on 8th April in the register office, Hastings, Sussex. He stated he was a widower. GRO 1912 June 02b 72 His wife, Augusta Sophia Lawrence, died in Hastings in 1922 March quarter In 1922 Alfred Lawrence married Annie Jane Wood (again) on 23rd February, in Worthing, Sussex, at The Evangelical Protestants Hall, Chatsworth Road. Annie gave her age as 43yrs*, spinster.   GRO 1922 March 02b 553 In 1922 Annie Jane Lawrence died on 1st June at 25, Thorn Road, Worthing, age 47yrs*. Alfred died, aged 83yrs, on 1st June 1926, at 25, Thorn Road, Worthing. Probate was granted to Henry Charles Pearcy, (brother-in-law) Assistant Company Secretary. Effects £603 4s 11d. Value 2021 - £38K.
