Life story

Alfred Mayo Hawthorn was born in St. Pancras, London in 1849, to tea-dealer, Josiah Hawthorn aged 35 and Susannah Robson aged 27. Alfred had two sisters, Mary and Alice. He married Brenda Louise Ashbee on 13 January 1874 in Battersea, Surrey. They had three daughters: Alice Jane Mayo, Agnes Margaret Mayo and Dorothy Mayo. Alfred became the manager of the London County and Westminster Bank. He retired to Worthing in 1912 and died on 12 October 1934 at the age of 85 at Heene House, Worthing and was buried in Heene Cemetery.

FUNERAL OF MR A. M. HAWTHORN OLD WORTHING RESIDENT Mr Alfred Mayo Hawthorn, of Heene House, Heene-road. was buried on Tuesday. Mr Hawthorn, who was 86, came to reside Heene House twenty years ago, when he retired from the banking business, He was formerly manager at the head office of the old London County and Westminster Bank. The Rector of Heene Rev. B. A. Havlland) was assisted the service by Mr Hawthorn's grandson the Rev. j, t. H. Boyton. It was held at Heene Parish Church, and the Interment was at the Heene burial ground The immediate mourners were: Mr and Mrs R. D. Boyson (son-in-law and daughter). Dr and Mrs Sayers (son-in-law and daughter), Mr Julian Boyson, Miss Sayers. Derek Sayers and Mr Nigel Sayers (grand-children). Among friends present were: J. J. Brown (London). Mr J. W. Brown (Southsea), Mr O. W. Castle (Worthing) ana Mr P. Reader. Mr W. W. Woodhams. of Lothbury, represented the Westminster Bank.
