Story
Alfred and Annie Coleman (from Elizabeth Dolan, Australia)
THIS is my Annie. I am so pleased I have found her and Alfred.
Annie’s death certificate says she died of TB in Kent County Lunatic Asylum which is Oakwood Hospital. Says that she was of 3 Wallace Cottages Elm Grove Heene, wife of Alfred Coleman a gardener.
In 1911 she is in Graylingwell Hospital, so I am thinking that she was probably still an inmate when Graylingwell was vacated for use as a military hospital hence why she ended up in Kent. I decided to purchase the death certificate for the Charlotte Nicholson I found in the same Maidstone
Asylum dying in 1897. Have a uncanny feeling that it is Annie’s mother.
Her sister Charlotte, who lived until 1959 (91 yrs) had 9 children of which my grandfather was the second eldest child and son.
It will also be very sad if she ended up in a mental institution for any reason as her start in life was not good. The children lost their father in 1874 at the age of 34 to TB.
What happened to mum Charlotte after 1876 I have not been able to find out. I suspect that she probably died in the workhouse or remarried and moved away.
In 1876 Charlotte places all the children except George, who may have been old enough to work with his grandfather William Stepney, in care.
The older two girls Charlotte and Annie end up in the Royal Female Asylum at Beddington (Carew Manor) and were trained for domestic service. The younger two surviving girls went to Lambeth Work School. Charlotte emigrated
with a family in 1889 when she was just 21 and ended up marrying in Queensland. Annie Nicholson married Alfred Coleman 26 Oct 1893 St Mary’s Lambeth.
Elizabeth was in service in 1891 but cannot find her in 1901 and the same with Alice. But I suspect the entry for an Alice Nicholson in 1897 in Kensington aged 23 may be her. George was with his Stepney grandparents in 1881 but in 1891 he has blended with too many Georges to stand out. I do know that they were all alive in 1892 when their grandfather Thomas Nicholson draw up his will. Mother Charlotte and daughter Charlotte were not mentioned.
Alfred was a local man. His father James was also a gardener. I do not know Alfred’s date of birth but do know that his parents were James Coleman and Elizabeth Ann Thompson and James’ parents were Henry Coleman and Caroline Steadman.
Alfred’s death certificate says he died 19 Reigate Road Worthing. His sister Nellie May Haskins was the informant.
I have traced Nellie and her marriage to Charles Haskins, they lived in Epsom. They had 7 boys and 1 girl. The girl maybe my best best because of the names, Lillie married Eric Shoebridge. Her daughter Jill married George A V Sturtivant. George died in Crawley Surrey in 1997 and Jill also in Surrey in 1992.
Other than that there is a Derek K Haskins. I am not sure if he is the same man but a Derek Haskins marries three times all in Surrey.
He was born in 1929 so could well be still alive. Derek is the oldest son of George Frederick Haskins, eldest son of the above Charles and Nellie Coleman.
