Life story

Life story

Alfred was born into the large family of William Boon, a cooper, and his wife, Ann, nee Medhurst, in July 1858 in Worthing. At the age of 22, he was living with the Saunders family at Cross-in-Hand Post Office, near Heathfield in Sussex. Already he was a journeyman baker and by 1891 he was a baker and confectioner living at 32, London Street, Broadwater with his wife and children. He had married Sarah Elizabeth Gibbs on 5 April 1885 at Littlehampton and they had 4 year old Alfred John and 2 year old Ethel. Alfred John is not shown on the 1891 Census with his parents and sister because he was visiting his maternal grandparents, John and Mary Ann Gibbs in Norfolk Road, Littlehampton. Alfred Boon died aged 35 in 1894 and was buried at Heene on 7 March.
