Life story

Alfred was born in Charlton, Wilts, the son of Josiah and Rhoda. He was baptised at All Saints church, Charlton on 15th July 1877. Josiah was a master baker and grocer. As a young man, Alfred trained as an auctioneer and by 1904, had moved to Lichfield in Staffordshire setting up a business in Market Street. Between 1904 and 1910, he lived at 70 Walsall Road, Lichfield. On 2nd November 1907, Alfred married Eveline Middleton Laing at St James church, Exeter. For a while, the couple lived with Alfred's parents in Fordingbridge, Hants before moving to Worthing. They lived at "Thornbury" 5 Ripley Road, Worthing and Alfred set up business as an estate agent in a shop opposite West Worthing Station. Eveline died on 6th February 1923 and was buried at Heene. The following year, Alfred married Gladys May Eade who came from Steyning. Alfred died on 8th March 1926 at Graylingwell Mental Hospital, Chichester. Probate was granted on 22nd September to Gladys May Bailey widow and George Stuart Smith clothier. Effects £3398 5s 5d.
