Life story

Life story

Albert Mitchel Milne was born on 24th November 1867 in Old Machar, Scotland (Old Machar is a parish within the city of Aberdeen). His Parents were Robert and Georgina Pirie Milne. Robert was the first manager appointed on the Great North of Scotland Railway. The railway was opened in 1854 and the directors soon realised that a post should be created for a manager. Robert Milne had studied engineering at university and went on to work for himself. He had been appointed as Secretary for the GNSR in 1851 which led him to being the most suitable choice as Manager. He held the post for 29 years when he had to resign due to ill health. Albert Mitchel became a Paper Manufacturer at Slateford Mill near Edinburgh. The mill is no longer there and became a farm. On the 1891 census Albert is visiting Jane Stevenson and her Daughter Anne. Albert then married Anne on 21st April 1893 in Glasgow. There is no further record of what happened to Albert and his wife Anne, records show that he went to New York on 6th May 1893 just two weeks after his marriage. However there is no record of Anne going with him. Albert doesn't appear again until the 1911 census which shows him boarding with Ernest Searle at 'Wynsford' Upper High Street Worthing, he is a widower and his occupation is shown to be an unemployed clerk. Albert died on 31st August 1912 at 3 Milton Street Worthing of Phthisis (Tuberculosis), pleurisy and Asthenia (physical weakness or lack of energy) his sister Marion was in attendance. He is buried in Heene cemetery, but is also shown on the family memorial at Nellfield cemetery, Aberdeen.
