Life story

Life story

Adah Shelley was born in Brighton, Sussex, in 1860, her parents were John Shelley, 44yrs, Drapery Assistant, and Eliza, 44yrs, nee Geere. She had 4 older siblings, Eliza 20, John 15, Frederick 10, and Charles 7. A sister, Clary, was born in 1863. Adah followed the family trade and by 21yrs of age she too, was a draper's assistant in Brighton. She moved to Paddington and in 1891 was employed as a Millinery Assistant. Shortly after, Adah travelled to Capetown, South Africa, where she married Frederick George Rogers in 1892, an Englishman from Essex, also in the Drapery trade. Their daughter, Edith May, was born in 1893 in Woodstock, Capetown, where they remained until 1909. Frederick and his wife and daughter returned to England, and in 1911, were living in Worthing, at 5, South Place. Adah died, aged 68yrs, in Worthing, on 20th February 1928.
