Life story

Life story

Ada was born in Ropsley, Lincolnshire on 11th December 1858 to Caroline (nee Richardson, 1824-81) and Richard Cleeve Hoyle (30/11/30-23/4/72.) Her father Richard was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and a Licentiate Appointment Practising as a Physician and Surgeon.

Ada was baptised on 16th January 1859 presumably at St Peter, the Anglican Norman church which had replaced a Saxon church on the site in 1380. Ropsley was an Ancient Parish which meant the area had first existed for ecclesiastical purposes then later gained secular functions.

The 1861 census records the Hoyle family living at 65 Green Man Tree. Here Ada lived with her parents, two sisters: Annie (5) and Mary Cleeve (3). Also in the household were Ada's uncle on her father's side, 25-year-old Richard Cleeve and her grandmother 71-year-old widow Sophia Snow. The house was maintained by two housemaids Mary Shillington (20) and Rachel Edwards (19). John Rouse, a 21-year-old groom also resided in the property.

In 1871 12-year-old schoolgirl Ada was lodging with her father at 6 Wildermarsh Villas, Ilfracombe, Devon. The house was run by Ann Scamp, who had one servant (Ellen Mack) to assist her. At the time there was one other lodger in the property, Ann Vibert (35). It is possible her father Richard was visiting Robert H Moon who lived in the adjoining property Capstone Lodge. Robert Moon was a retired LSA (Licence of the Society of Apothecaries) surgeon.

A year later Richard died on 24th April 1872 at Bridgeland Street, Bideford, Devon. His Estate was administered by daughter Florence Caroline who lived at 1 South Parade, Derby. He left 79p 14s 2d.

By 1881 Ada was living in Kemp Town, Brighton with sisters Mary and Florence. At the property in 28 Bloomsbury Place they had one boarder, Anne, and one domestic servant Elizabeth.

A year later Ada's mother Caroline passed away.

In 1891 33-year-old Ada was a school governess. She resided at Waltham Lane, Cheshunt with solicitor Herbert Gough (48), his wife Caroline, and their two daughters Alice (9) and Caroline (6). Two servants Mary Osler (a 40-year-old widowed cook) and Susannah Barrell a 20-year-old domestic servant worked in the house.

At the turn of the century in 1901 spinster Ada had moved to Worthing. She lived at 21 Lennox Road with her sister Mary Cleeve. The property, owned and run by Harriett Blythe, was also home to three grocers' assistants, and a 74-year-old who like Ada and Mary was independently wealthy (living on own means').

Ada Sophia Hoyle died on New Year's Day 1924 aged 65. She was buried on 5th January at Heene Cemetery by JP Fallowes. Her Probate was administered by Howlett of Chichester. She left an estate of £1076 12s 5d.

The Last Will and Testament for Ada Sophia Hoyle was dated 21st September 1910.
