Ada was born in the village of Kensington Gravel Pits. The village was at the junction of what is now Bayswater Road and Kensington Church Street. It is now Notting Hill Gate. It was named after the gravel quarries between the village and Kensington. Ada was the daughter of Joseph, a brickmaker and his wife Mary. She was baptised at St Mary Abbots Church, Kensington on 6th April 1845. Ada was sent to school in Hampton and later to a boarding school in Margate. She became a tutor in a school in Wandsworth. On 13th March 1873, Ada married Samuel Harley Cheshire at St Gabriel's Church, Warwick Square, London. Samuel was a tea dealer and widower, having been married twice before. The couple had two children, Hugh born in 1875 and Leslie born in 1880. The family lived in Camberwell for a while before moving to Croydon. In 1909, they moved to Worthing, living at "Pendyke" in Belsize Road. Samuel died on 28th July 1916. Ada continued to live at "Pendyke" until she died on 11th September 1921.
